There are so many different terms thrown around by professionals, amateurs, and DIY’s when it comes to flooring. Flooring is an ancient art with many variables, techniques, and materials used to create something beautiful, useful, and complete. At JJ Hardwood Floors, we don’t want people getting the wrong information from the internet, their friends, or handypersons. That’s why, once and a while, we like to publish an article that clears the air and brings some clarity and expertise to flooring dialogues.

We work with our clients and listen to what they desire most out of their new custom wood floors and make it a reality by sourcing the right materials for the hardwood floor installation and hardwood floor refinishing

The appropriate woods must be matched with the best hardwood stains and dyes to create our clients’ most desired outcome. Selecting the right hardwood stain is a pivotal piece to creating a great final product.

This article will discuss wood floor staining, what it is, and how hardwood stains differ from hardwood dyes.

What is a Hardwood Stain and How is It Used?

Hardwood stains are liquid solutions made of pigments that stick in between the wood’s grains and pores. There are two common/primary types of hardwood stain. One is a water-based stain, and the other is an oil-based stain. Every stain has a pigment and also a carrier and binding elements. Stains are great at bringing out the natural grain pattern of woods and creating visual contrast within the color tones of the wood.

In the most rudimentary sense, a hardwood stain is a solution used to color the wood and augment its visual appearance.

Hardwood dyes (sometimes referred to as wood tints) typically come in powdered form and then are mixed with a solvent to create a liquid solution to apply to the hardwood. Dyes penetrate deeper into the wood, and this is because they bind with the wood at a deeper “molecular” level.

Unlike stains, dyes do not need a binding agent in the solution. Dyes can add deep, rich, and vibrant color to the wood that is more uniform and consistent than a stain applied by itself.

It’s all About Creating the Best Solution

At JJ Hardwood, we use custom techniques that involve both stains and dyes to create rich and beautiful tones unmatched by other hardwood flooring installation crews.

When we think about what the client desires, it’s not about using this stain or that dye; it’s about using all the solutions we have at our disposal to create beautiful flooring that will meet expectations for both beauty and functionality. Stains and dyes do not have to be used exclusively. Over the years, we’ve created truly unique and breathtaking floors by using custom stain solutions.
